Classic, elegant, and quietly residential, the Upper East Side is where much of Manhattan's prewar grandeur lives.

The character

Traditional and refined, the Upper East Side trades nightlife for calm, tree-lined blocks, Central Park along its western edge, and Museum Mile. It has long been a stronghold for families and buyers who value space, quiet, and a settled feel.

Housing stock

Getting around

The Lexington Avenue 4, 5, and 6 trains run the length of the neighborhood, and the Second Avenue Q has made the far east far more convenient than it once was.

Who it suits, and the tradeoffs

Best for families and buyers who want prewar space and a peaceful pace, often at better value per square foot than downtown. The tradeoff is a quieter scene at night and a longer crosstown trip to the West Side.
